Full Bio

Bauer/Mlakar (fka. MMACHINE) is the Berlin-based artist duo composed of Martin Bauer and Maj Mlakar. Their work explores the interaction between analog and digital methods, producing abstract oil and acrylic paintings. They use a range of techniques, including a custom-built 2 × 6 meter plotter that translates digital commands into precise brushstrokes. Their process emphasizes repetition, structure, and subtle variations, resulting in compositions that feel both systematic and alive. Their work recalls concrete art while creating space for contemporary digital resonance.

Notable works include LINES-2301/17, 2023, an oil on Velin paper measuring 70 by 70 centimeters, known for its powerful and balanced composition rich in luminous colors. 107Blue, 2024, a larger oil painting on specially coated Velin, stands out for its flawless balance between technical precision and painterly depth. In 40Q/DOTS/FP1, 2024, an acrylic on wove paper limited edition of 10, they create delicate dot and line compositions in bright pink that unfold with calm, thoughtful precision. Beyond canvas, the duo has also completed large-scale work for public spaces, including a 4 × 3 meter wall painting for the Hotel Der Wilhelmshof lobby in Vienna.
