Full Bio

Huw Messie is an artist and technologist based in New York. A 2021 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Art, he studied human-computer interaction and time-based media. His work in computational embroidery, a process that uses code to turn moving images into stitched animation, has earned him notable recognition, including the 2024 Steve Jobs Archive Fellowship and a microgrant from the Award Fund for Art at the Frontier.

His artistic vision comes to life in projects like the Bizarre Fabrications series, where he creates embroidered stop-motion animations that explore interconnected systems of people, machines, and materials through thread. This interest in the mechanics of flatness and repetition also informed a collaboration with Burberry, for which he produced an algorithmically embroidered animation to showcase their scarf personalization service. Additionally, Messie developed a VR gallery combining photogrammetry scans of real objects with their low-poly video game representations, inviting viewers to reconsider the relationship between the tangible and the virtual. Throughout his work, Messie pushes the boundaries of digital media, blending technology and craftsmanship to make tactile, thought-provoking creations.
