Full Bio

John Provencher, born in 1991, is an independent artist, designer, and educator based in New York City. His practice focuses on the generative possibilities of software to create works both online and offline. Drawing from his graphic design background, he transforms fundamental elements of the web such as pixel grids and interface components into dynamic visual systems through code.

His work is inspired by early net art and the physical nature of the internet. Provencher explores iteration, chance, and digital permanence through projects that visualize blockchain transactions and evolving web interfaces. He codes circular and DNA-like Lissajous forms, introducing imperfections to expand their expressive range. His generative works often extend into physical forms, including screen prints produced from algorithmic designs.

Alongside his personal practice, Provencher co-founded fruitful.school, a workshop series that examined contemporary artistic engagement with technology and the web. He has developed projects like spawn.club, featuring generative video game characters as NFTs, and A Map is a Score, which combines digital dithering with physical prints. His ongoing experiments push the limits of digital image-making while maintaining a strong connection between the virtual and the material worlds.
