Description

Charles Csuri continued working in text-based environments even after commercially available 3D graphics programs had emerged. 19th Century Space Station exemplifies his commitment to writing his own algorithms in a text-only Unix environment. He generated and manipulated complex 3D forms that he then fragmented into constellations of exploding stars and particles. All elements of this work were drawn and transformed through computational instruction rather than direct visual modeling.

Csuri’s algorithmic investigation of form turned abstract scientific ideas into visual phenomena. The work reflects his interest in cosmology—particularly string theory—by breaking down computer-generated objects into fields of particles and forces. The resulting image evokes a cosmic explosion where elements appear both suspended and propelled outward at once, suggesting a universe structured not by solid matter but by vibrating, one-dimensional strands of energy. In this way, 19th Century Space Station offers a poetic and legible artistic interpretation of a highly complex scientific concept, while also drawing on Csuri’s long-standing fascination with speculative futures and the science fiction of writers such as Jules Verne.

The work belongs to Csuri’s Infinity series, dating back to 1966 when he conceived Feeding Time and Random War by imagining an infinite image generator. As was typical of his practice, Csuri set computational systems in motion to produce thousands of images, later assuming the role of editor by selecting those he found most compelling. This method allowed him to balance rigorous algorithmic structure with aesthetic judgment, positioning chance and surprise as generative forces within the work. For Csuri, the inability to fully anticipate an outcome was not a limitation but a condition for discovery—an approach that shaped his explorations until the end of his life.
