Description

Foto-Yaponiya (Photo Japan) was a Russian-language magazine about Japan. Issue No. 8 carries a feature titled "The Computing Machine Creates Works of Art," about the computer drawings made in Shigeru Watanabe's mechanical-engineering laboratory at the University of Tokyo.

The feature reproduces two drawings by Naomasa Nakajima, then a doctoral student in the laboratory. The first is a single dragonfly from a symmetrical pattern of four, built mostly from families of parabolas. The second is a full-page plate captioned "The final product," a computer re-creation of an ukiyo-e picture of a courtesan.
