LIA has been creating work with code since 1995, and Drawing Machine x4 was gestated for a long time before completion, tracing its origins to experiments she conducted in 2004. The algorithm was originally used to create the cover art for “A Rose is a Rose,” an album by Portuguese musician Vitor Joaquim.

While the images are static, they read as records of frenetic movement. Black lines are deposited as if cast off by rapid vibrations. Given the “machines” evoked in the title, the images recall a particularly chaotic brand of plotter drawing, or perhaps drawings made by strapping a pen to a violently shaking device. LIA does make plotter works, but these images are rendered by code, creating an energetic mechanical mark-making through entirely digital means. The twelve works seen here highlight the contrast between the bright white ground and the dark, dense abstract figures built up by layers of thin lines.
