The title of each individual artwork in this series by Tom White’s series doubles as the input phrase for a neural network. White explores how the same combination of words can direct both the AI’s generative process and the audience’s interpretation.
Each piece in the series features one large, colorful eye amid an expressionistic background of squiggly lines. The works are eerily responsive; the eye follows our mouse as it rolls across the screen. In Eye of the Eagle, a pink eye looms among a tangle of monochromatic lines that resemble a set of wings. We can guess how the AI interpreted its input data: eagle → bird → wings. In _The Eye Creatures, _meanwhile, a piercing blue eye peers out from within a dumpling body, legs bursting from its underside. Would we identify this abstract being, and its fuzzier counterparts, as “creatures” without White’s specifying title? White’s input phrase thus not only controls the AI’s generation process, but our own process of comprehension.
