Full Bio

Daniela Kroehnert is a German-native architectural researcher and artist who specializes in digital fabrication and computational drawing. She studied architecture at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and graduated with distinction from the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Early in her career, she gained valuable experience working with Coop Himmelb(l)au, a renowned architecture firm known for its innovative and experimental designs. Today, Daniela teaches digital design and fabrication across several departments at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and leads their Digital Design and Production Lab.

Describing herself as a maker, Kroehnert embraces a hands-on, experimental approach to her work. She enjoys mastering new skills and turning complex ideas into physical form, combining technical precision with creative exploration. Her private studio, DARK, focuses on pen plotting - using both vintage HP plotters and custom-built machines - to create detailed, scientific-themed artworks featuring butterflies, star clusters, and insects. Her process involves translating photographs into layered geometric patterns through advanced software, blending digital accuracy with human touch.

Influenced by artists like Vera Molnár and Chuck Close, Kroehnert’s work explores the intersection of technology, perception, and nature. Through her intricate compositions, she invites viewers to engage with scale and detail in thoughtful ways. By merging architectural thinking with scientific curiosity and artistic experimentation, Daniela has built a distinctive practice that bridges digital innovation and traditional craft.
