Daniela Kroehnert built a plotter during the 2020 lockdown to pursue greater precision in her mechanical works. The first pieces made with this machine belong to her series Butterflies (2020–), which reflect her attention to order and scale in natural forms, as well as her background in architecture.
The creation process begins with Kroehnert grouping photographs by color, translating the tones into points on a grid, and converting these into instructions that her plotter can follow. Dot by dot, the butterfly comes into view. She tests pens, adjusts inks, and refines the outcome as it develops, keeping an active role in its development. The work seen here is rendered through arcs and grids of colored segments, the wings unfolding as mosaics. Handwritten scientific names for each insect frame the piece as a natural history chart that expresses Kroehnert’s lifelong fascination with the beauty and biology of butterflies.
