Grey Path #36

Satoshi Aizawa

2024

NFT/Digital

Description

Created as a tribute to pioneering Japanese computer artist Hiroshi Kawano, Grey Path was commissioned for “Patterns of Flow,” an exhibition presented by the platform Feral File online and in Tokyo. The series reworks Aizawa’s earlier Path (2021) through the Python library NumPy—software that, like Kawano’s early programming experiments, builds images from the numerical language of computation itself.

Each work in the series renders monochrome data as finely tuned pixel arrays, producing subtle gray tonalities that emerge from the interplay of light and form. In Grey Path #36, interlocking boxes of varying size rise against a smooth gradient background, their precision revealing beauty at the threshold of perception.

Designed to be experienced at its native resolution, Grey Path resists the compression of social media and the casual glance. It asks viewers to slow down, to meet its complexity with care—a quiet homage to both digital craft and attentive seeing.
