Plotter Drawing

12"x10"

Description

An algorithm written by the artist determined the initial trajectory and distribution of this cloud of multicolored marks, allowing a multi-pen plotter machine to draw wandering lines in a pseudo-random arrangement. What emerges is a visual harmony between “random selection” and “rational control” that characterizes much of Roman Verostko’s algorithmic work. This piece was drawn by a plotter machine running the artist’s own custom coded Hodos software, written with Basic and Digital Microprocessor/Plotting Language (DM/PL). The cinnabar chop, or seal, in the top left was carved for the artist in China, affirming his connection to the East Asian calligraphy techniques he learned in the country during visits in the 1980s.
