This machine‑drawn grid comprises exactly 2,000 unique computer‑generated motifs, plotted line by line with no repetition. It belongs to a series of drawings and prints that Verostko made to celebrate the turn of the millennium. He wrote an algorithm to act as a generative system of instructions and parameters, which were realized as unique variations drawn by a HiPlot 7000 multi-pen plotter running the artist’s own custom Hodos software.
Verostko likened these generative systems to biological genomes: evolving mediums that carry encoded potential manifested through execution. “By joining software form generators with fine arts practice,” he explained, “I create aesthetic objects to be contemplated much as we contemplate the wondrous forms of nature.”
