Roman Verostko likened the generative algorithms of his custom-coded Hodos software to biological genotypes. He thought of them as living, growing organisms containing coded information for infinite variations. This plotter drawing from the artist’s “Scarab”_ _series evokes a dance between human, nature, and the machine. As Verostko explained: “By joining software form generators with fine arts practice, I create aesthetic objects to be contemplated much as we contemplate the wondrous forms of nature.”
The 400 insect-like glyphs shown here were drawn by a multi-pen plotter machine connected to a PC running Verostko’s custom-coded Hodos software. The various layers of green, red, and orange lines are shaped along grid axes and use vertical and horizontal symmetries to create compositional structures. Working with inks mixed in the artist’s studio, the plotter machine made thousands of individual marks, cycling through frequent software-controlled pen changes in the execution of the final drawing. With works such as _Scarabs Gamma, _Verostko hoped to produce “an infinity of visual worlds never before seen by the human eye.”
