Simple rules can yield complex results. That’s particularly true in the case of Alternate, a series of 200 generative artworks produced by Kim Asendorf in 2023. Executed entirely on-chain, each work uses only 9 kilobytes of code to create abstract animations of dizzying complexity that never repeat. Each animation begins either as a series of lines or squares made up of dense lines, but in either case they begin to immediately distort and shift.
In the case of Alternate 12v1, tight black and white stripes are joined by fields of muted blues along with the occasional red and orange accents. Each iteration of Alternate has four possible versions, the second and third of which can be activated through a special smart contract command. The artist calls these states a “secondary market hack,” in that running the modification function incurs a fee that increases each time it is invoked. The modifications cannot be reversed.
