Description

Julien Espagnon’s _Crypsis _series represents a year-long experiment in novel ways to use the plotter. His background in applied arts and interactive design informed his blend of digital systems and material processes.

As he digitally generated more than eight hundred outputs for the series, Espagnon explored how overlapping forms might suggest concealment. From these, he selected images to convert to SVG files, and used an Axidraw plotter to render them on canvas with acrylic markers. He created fifteen canvases in this way, then reworked them by hand with paint to add color and texture. The canvases served as research that helped shape the final selection of forty digital works. In Crypsis #09, layers of colorful shapes overlap across the surface around an eye-like form at the center.

Through Crypsis, painting once again became part of Espagnon’s process, allowing him to blend colors and introduce handmade qualities to his plotted pieces.
