CryptoCitizens is a complete set of 10 from the 10,000-piece generative portrait series produced between 2021 and 2024 through Bright Moments, an organization that reframed minting NFTs as a collective, in-person cultural event. Across nine physical gatherings and one virtual edition—moving from Venice Beach, California, to Venice, Italy—each city hosted the release of a set of pixelated figures, minted live before an audience. To receive a CryptoCitizen, participants had to be present, opening an Ethereum wallet on site and witnessing the moment of generation as a shared experience rather than as a purely transactional drop.
Created by Qian Qian, a graphic designer with a background in commercial illustration, each image is composed on a 45-by-45 grid, openly referencing the pixelated visual language of CryptoPunks while extending it by making the background a meaningful variable. Landscapes, clothing, accessories, and color palettes encode local identity: Berlin’s Fernsehturm and club culture, London’s gray skies and black cabs, Patagonia’s mountains and wildlife, Tokyo’s seasonal symbolism, or Venice Beach’s surf and roller skates. Qian’s process combined firsthand observation, photography, and research, with care taken to avoid stereotype and honor local perception.
