The aesthetic of some of the earliest personal computer interfaces still serves as a fertile ground for generative artists today. The distinct look of ASCII text and symbols in a rigid grid, like on a DOS terminal, defines Device 1, a series of generative works on the Tezos blockchain by Andreas Gysin, released under the name of his studio ertdfgcvb.
Gysin’s work in graphic design, interaction design, and games has led to a playful and experimental approach to the limited palette of ASCII art. _Device 1 _uses custom software made with Javascript and WebGL to create 256 unique expressions of an algorithm. Characters pulse and cycle over a black background, creating a dizzying array of patterns.
