Description

_Hoek II _is one of the pieces Peter Struycken made with Hoek (Angle), a program he wrote in 1976–77 to explore the possibilities of what could be drawn with a single line. The program drew continuous lines from sequences of points, selecting angles at random to produce a path shaped by orderly steps and deviations.

The unbroken line of _Hoek II _is defined by a sequence of 5,000 points. When the line reached the edge of the paper, it reappeared on the opposite side. If no suitable angle could be found after repeated trials, the previous one was used again. At times, an angle was subtracted rather than added, causing the line to turn clockwise.

Negative space dominates Hoek II, pulling the eye toward the plotter lines, which give the work with a sense of rhythm through varied spacing and fluctuating form.
