Vormgeving en Exacte Discipline – 1 jaar Peter Struycken aan de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht (Design and Exact Discipline: 1 year of Peter Struycken at Utrecht University)_ _is a publication examining the relationship between visual design, mathematics, and scientific method.
Designed by Swip Stolk, the booklet was produced by the university during Struycken’s tenure as a guest lecturer there and. It contains essays by Struycken, Cor Blok, R.H. Fuchs, Obe A. de Vries, and Arthur Veen on art and science, presented together with folded sheets containing diagrams and visual studies of geometric transformations.
The publication includes Kalenderstrook (Calendar strip, 1970), a computer-generated work produced with the program OSTRE, written in Algol 60 by physicist Stan Tempelaars, who collaborated with Struycken at Utrecht University. Kalenderstrook is named for the handy calendars with the same long, horizontal layout. Black squares scatter and cluster across the surface, their shifting density marking a gradual movement between order and disorder, where fixed rules meet the unpredictability of chance.
