Description

This is the catalogue of Geluid <=> Kijken (Sound <=> Sight), an exhibition of audio-visual installations by Ton Bruynèl, Dick Raaijmakers and Peter Struycken at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1971. Each artist has a flexidisc inside the back cover.

Struycken's Beeld en geluid programma 1 (Image and Sound Programme 1, 1970) was a computer-generated work in which a field of 16 by 16 squares and an electronic soundtrack changed every three seconds over 180 steps. He built both from 24 basic patterns, and because each pattern could be switched on or off, there were 16,777,216 possible combinations of image and of sound.

Stan Tempelaars wrote the selection program, olpg, at the computing center of Utrecht University. It decided how many patterns, and which ones, appeared at each step, using in part a procedure taken from Gottfried Michael Koenig's composition program Project 2. A punched tape switched the image and a separate tape played the sound, and since the two were started out of step, image and sound drifted against each other in the gallery.

Aide A holds structures 1 to 120, and side B holds structures 121 to 180 and the 24 basic elements.
