Inventory Numbers is a horizontally unfolding digital tableau in which overlapping human silhouettes drift back and forth across a long white field. Rendered primarily in black and white, with flashes of orange and deep blue, the figures gain both transparency and weight as the animation proceeds. The work simulates the sensation of moving through a crowded street: bodies pass in opposite directions, anonymous, detached, and rhythmically unaware of one another.
Rau draws these silhouettes from two sources—the Finnish National Museum’s collection and his own photographic archive—and layers them in a shared visual field that collapses whatever distinctions their origins might carry. Periodically, the composition reorders itself, while robotic voices recite archival inventory numbers in multiple languages, reducing human presence to data. Both hypnotic and unsettling, Inventory Numbers explores how accumulation, abstraction, and motion can express collective existence in a digitally entangled world.
