Description
Noir Orion (plotter drawing) is a large plotter drawing made of 63 individual drawings that explore the gradual transformation of a simple shape: the circle.
Each iteration in the larger drawing was created by a generative algorithm (computer program) written by the artist. This algorithm uses randomness and geometric operations to create a new output (and new version of the circle) every time the algorithm is run. For this work, the artist ran the algorithm many times, creating a large number of outputs, and from these selected 63 specific iterations. He then combined the 63 selections into one larger piece, giving the work its structural coherence.
The 63 selections displayed in the larger work evolve a circle into increasingly elaborate configurations. Then, in a reversing motion, the configurations simplify until they return to a simple circle with lines evocative of a star. This creates a single work that explores not just the capabilities of the algorithm, but weaves a connection between pure mathematical abstraction and a cosmic entity.
Ragnar Digital, in addition to the plotter drawing, owns a limited edition book featuring these iterations, and the base algorithm.
