Description

Rectangular Hatching exemplifies Nake’s sustained investigation into the expressive potential of straight lines, the form most congenial to early plotting machines. Using variations in spacing, density, and orientation, the algorithm generates fields of hatch marks that suggest shifts in tone, volume, and spatial tension. The image emerges from accumulation; countless linear strokes together produce complex visual effects. As a test print, the work reflects Nake’s experimental approach, treating the plotted image as a probe into the behavior of a system rather than a finished composition. Here, the computer’s mechanical preference for uniform marks becomes a strength, revealing how minimal means can yield rich perceptual variation when governed by carefully designed rules.
