Lenia Mascha’s Silver Lining 2402-04 continues the lineage of early computer art experiments with pen plotters, updating them with contemporary technology.
The work forms part of the series Silver Linings; the digits in the title refer to the individual piece’s date of execution. In this series, Mascha draws on the computer graphics method of procedural design, which uses algorithms to generate content, to create easily modifiable pattern designs. The designs are then plotted on paper with pens controlled by a small robotic arm. For Mascha, this process is a way to highlight the connection between the rule-based logic of the craft practices of drawing and weaving on one hand and mechanical automation on the other.
The pens used for this work are a Pigma Micron, Staedtler, and Stabilo. The plotter is a Rotrics DexArm. The drawing, on 180 gsm paper, is mounted on a gray graphic board.
