Description

Über Musik und zum Computer (About Music and Computers) is a 134-page hardcover volume by Herbert Brün, exploring the emerging use of computers in serious new music. Issued with a 9-inch vinyl record of listening examples, the book situates theoretical discussion alongside pioneering sound experiments. Side A of the record presents works generated on the University of Illinois CSX-1 computer, including early studies from 1964–66 and material used in Brün’s Sonoriferous Loops. Side B features compositions realized on the Illiac II (1967–69), also at the University of Illinois, ranging from abstract sound material to solo drum pieces. These pieces document computers’ growing role as creative partners in music composition.
