Description
Colors build, clump, and blend in the repetitive loops of Marcel Schwittlick’s Upward Spiral. Born from the boredom and isolation of the Covid-19 lockdown, the series of 144 drawings were made with a custom plotter programmed to move in a continual spiral motion as it dragged Markal Quik Stik paint markers over paper. The resulting images resemble open cylinders made of thick, sticky loops of color.
The paint markers come in 12 hues, and each drawing features two layers of marks, one color overlaying the other. The 144 finished pieces represent every possible permutation of this scheme, resulting in a grid of muddled rainbow cylinders.
