Description

Aggressive diagonal lines of black and blue burst across the paper. They look like the aftermath of the kind mark-making that risks stabbing the stylus right through the page. But the marks of Marcel Schwittlick’s Composition #96 were actually made in a slow and meticulous manner by a vintage drawing machine, the HP 7550B Plus.

Along with a series of similar abstract works, this image manages to convey the energetic scribble of a human hand through entirely mechanical means. The artist was inspired by synths, translating the electronic extension of music making to the realm of drawing. The artist’s expressive capacity can be synthesized by machines while being expanded and transformed.
