Description

On 24 August 1841 Henri d'Orléans, duc d'Aumale, a son of King Louis-Philippe, visited the Croix-Rousse workshop of the master weaver Michel-Marie Carquillat in Lyon.

Carquillat recorded the visit in this woven silk picture. The duke and local officials stand around a Jacquard loom, with its chain of punched cards hanging from the top of the frame. At the center, Carquillat shows the duke his woven portrait of Jacquard.

Like the portrait, the scene was woven from a painting by Claude Bonnefond. A. Manin translated it into the pattern for the punched cards. Carquillat dedicated the finished piece to the King, and the officials present are named in the inscription beneath the image.
