Generative art and quilting might seem like disparate art forms, but Anna Lucia, who works with both code and textiles, saw connections worth exploring. Generations represents a collaboration with the quilt artisans of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, who are widely recognized for their excellence and have been increasingly included in art historical accounts of 20th century abstraction.
Released through ARSNL, the project includes 500 generative digital works and six physical quilts produced by the Gee’s Bend collective that served as inspiration for the algorithm’s pattern. The works seen here are a special pair of digital and physical works, where a single piece by Anna Lucia became the model for a new quilt by third generation Gee’s Bend quilter Mary Margaret Pettway.
