Francoise Gamma’s gonzo examination of anatomy thrusts expectation and effect into stark opposition. Like much of Gamma’s work, lm32 defies our ability to believe what we’re seeing even after many viewings.
Gamma’s trademark style employs exclusively single-pixel lines that flash frantically, with solid fields of color that evoke Microsoft Paint or other primitive image-making software programs. The figure in lm32 is a heap of polychromatic polygons that rise up, meander to the edge of the frame, and peer out, as if looking through a keyhole. The precise, silken movements defy the instability of the janky aesthetic.
Gamma’s “anatomical drawing” is an impossible undertaking. He aims to express humanity with the limited means of line segments, polygons, and pools of color. The results are comically awkward but sometimes surprisingly lifelike. In the medium’s failures, Gamma finds artistic success.
