“I like the idea of intentionally getting lost.” This is how William Mapan describes delving into his intricate, algorithmic image-making process. He often begins with hand-drawn sketches and translates them to digital media, then repeats the process to create layers of complexity.
In Strands of Solitude #113, as in many other works, the final effect is a dense network of cuts and swirls in a muted palette. Meant to evoke the paradox of connection and isolation in a digitally connected world, the works look almost like fine paper marbling. That ancient process depends on a balance between great care and unpredictability—a balance that is also emblematic of Mapan’s work.
