Full Bio

Joanie Lemercier, born in 1982 in Pithiviers, France, is a visual artist based in Brussels, where he has lived and worked since 2013. He was introduced to computers and digital design at an early age through his mother, who taught graphic design at a fashion school in Rennes. By the age of five, he was already creating patterns on the computer, an experience that grounded his lifelong fascination with patterns and form. He later enrolled in a work-study program in fashion and moved to London, where he first discovered projection mapping and began experimenting with light as a medium.

Lemercier works with light and space to challenge how we perceive our surroundings. Through precise projection and programming, he transforms everyday materials like water mist and glass into surfaces that interact with light in unexpected ways. His work explores the relationship between natural forms and mathematical models, using algorithms to simulate complex phenomena such as mountains, clouds, and ocean waves. His creations capture the natural complexity and fluidity found in the organic world, moving beyond predictable patterns. His connection to the environment runs deeper than his art, inspiring him to actively engage in climate activism. Lemercier believes technology can expose hidden environmental threats and commits his skills to aid activists on the front lines. Through his art and collaborations, he pushes for real change by revealing invisible damage and reminding us all that the future depends on the choices we make today.

In 2013, Lemercier co-founded Studio Lemercier in Brussels as a dedicated space to explore light as an artistic medium. The studio focuses on combining advanced technology with environmental awareness, creating immersive installations that transform unconventional surfaces and custom-built structures into dynamic canvases. His work has been featured in major solo exhibitions including Paisajes de Luz at Fundación Telefónica in Madrid and Points de vue at the Centre d’art contemporain de la Matmut, as well as at international festivals and venues such as MUTEK, Sonar, and Nuit Blanche Paris. He frequently collaborates with notable sound artists including Murcof, Flying Lotus, Jay-Z, Before Tigers, and Thomas Vaquié to create rich multisensory experiences.
