Nuages Possibles by Joanie Lemercier and Quentin Hocdé presents clouds as possibilities, where code gives form to what could exist, and invites collectors to take part in determining the final forms of the algorithm’s outputs.
This project reflects Lemercier’s interest in patterns and the representation of natural forms through computation, as well as Hocdé’s experience in interactive design. Each work was generated by code, with parameters like scale and density defining each variation before it was translated into drawing. After a collector set the parameters, the plotter drew the image on black paper. A single pen marked up to 20,000 white ink dots to create gradients, shadows, and light, applying the techniques of 19th-century pointillism through an automated process. In Nuages Possibles #16, the cloud is defined by the tension between dense clusters of dots and open space.
