Joel Cammarata’s _BT CMA 06 _is an accomplished example of the contemporary wave of plotter drawing that has resulted from a new generation of artists rediscovering a technology prominent in the earliest days of computer art.
Cammarata, who has a background in architecture, began experimenting with pen plotters in 2019. While many plotter artists create their compositions with generative code, Cammarata uses AutoCAD—a computer-aided design software commonly used by architects and engineers—to draw abstractions in the vein of Op art.
A central aspect of Cammarata’s work is the contrast between the precisely calibrated digital compositions and the tactile nature of the physical drawing produced by the plotter. Using different paints, inks, and surfaces, he seeks out unexpected effects and glitches (and sometimes adds his own hand-painted layers) that emphasize the materiality of the work.
This 1/1 piece was executed in various shades of ink on watercolor paper using a Bantam Tools Artframe pen plotter.
