This limited-edition 12” documents a late-1970s collaboration between Laurie Spiegel and Don Christensen, pairing early computer music with downtown New York’s rhythmic urgency. On the A-side, Spiegel’s work with the ElectroComp 101 synthesizer unfolds in tandem with Christensen’s propulsive drumming, creating a dynamic interplay between programmed sound and live improvisation. The B-side features an alternate version of “Patchwork,” drawn from Spiegel’s The Expanding Universe, offering a contrasting glimpse into her solo explorations of algorithmic composition. With these two tracks, the record captures a moment when emerging electronic tools intersected with experimental performance, emphasizing process, variation, and the expressive potential of early synthesizer systems.
