Grid Snippet 00, 01, and 02 are studies for Monogrid, a much larger and more complex series of 256 generative works produced in 2021. While Monogrid uses a 16-by-16 grid to situate each individual work among axes of tone, density, and animated energy, the Grid Snippet works are instead one-off experiments that nevertheless use the same algorithmic fundamentals as the larger series. Almost like preparatory drawings for a large painting, these works explore the expressive potential of this particular generative system, but in more limited terms. While the works in Monogrid adapt to any screen size, the sizes of the Grid Snippet iterations are fixed, and the animations are looped videos instead of endless real-time generations.
