Constraints have a way of spurring creative innovation. For Andreas Gysin and Sidi Vanetti, the limited surface and strict black-and-white palette of 64-by-64 pixel LED displays served as the canvas for a series of generative works called Matrices.
The animated work _Recursive Tile #20 _cycles through algorithmically generated abstract designs that are assembled from tiles of smaller 8-by-8 pixel designs. These components each run through the same short animated sequence in staggered sequences, creating a mesmerizing pattern of patterns. Collectors have the option to obtain the work on a custom LED display or view it in a browser.
