Full Bio

Ivona Tau was born in 1990 in Vilnius, Lithuania. She studied mathematics at Warsaw University, earning both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees before completing a PhD in artificial intelligence at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology. Alongside her academic work, she trained in photography in Warsaw and New York. Her path reflects a steady pull between structure and imagination, bringing together science and image-making in ways that feel both deliberate and deeply personal.

Tau’s work unfolds at the intersection of memory, technology, and emotion, where generative adversarial networks become a tool for storytelling rather than just code. She moves fluidly between concepts, shifting from nature to urban life, from past memories to imagined futures, creating images that feel both personal and universal. Her process is thoughtful and deliberate; she carefully curates datasets and guides the AI, knowing that the emotional impact only comes alive when a viewer connects with the work. By blending analog photography with cutting-edge AI, Ivona builds layered worlds that challenge how we perceive reality and invite us to reflect on the fragile balance between human experience and machine interpretation. She carefully balances control with openness, guiding the AI while welcoming its unexpected quirks; those early “flaws” she once resisted have become vital textures that enrich her work. This ongoing dialogue between artist and machine uncovers hidden patterns and deepens our understanding of how technology and intuition intersect in the creative process.

Her work has gained prominence through powerful solo shows like Submerged in Vertiginous Fields in Copenhagen and notable group exhibitions such as Augmented Intelligence at Christie’s New York. Her innovative approach has earned her top awards at Digital Ars 2020 and Computer Space 2021, as well as recognition as one of the Top 10 Women in AI by the Women in Tech Foundation. Ivona continues to push the boundaries of AI-driven creativity, shaping what digital art can be.
