Inspired by the pagan traditions of her native Lithuania, Ivona Tau’s Mythic Latent Glitches dance between AI-generated imagery and human interference.
To create the 333-piece collection, Tau trained a GAN on hundreds of photographs she herself had taken in Lithuania’s forests. She prompted this GAN to design trees and other natural objects, then introduced artificial glitches by hand. Her process mimicked the divine creation of nature and the development of symbols that humans use to depict it. The outputs seen here feature digital interferences that the artist has labeled “random tile misplacement” and “tv-lines,” referring respectively to the glitch-like boxes and thin wires traversing the frames. The bright blue and magenta hues in _Mythic Latent Glitches #198 _emerge from the extreme expression of a third distortion that Tau calls “color burn.”
_Mythic Latent Glitches _is a literal and figurative manifestation of Tau’s biography. Pine and fir trees represent her homeland’s natural environment, which has exerted a strong influence on her aesthetic. Hand-made decor at music festivals outside Vilnius provided the inspiration for the project; Tau considers this contemporary folk art “an illustration of godly forces…inhabiting these places.” Built on a carefully composed dataset and infused with memories of her upbringing, _Mythic Latent Glitches is _perhaps Tau’s most personal work.
