On rare occasions an artwork can be so simple and so iconic that it functions on the level of a logo, an unmistakable mark that stands for an idea much bigger than the image itself. In the world of NFTs, Chromie Squiggle is one of only a handful of projects to obtain this status.
The generative series, which includes 10,000 outputs, was created by Erick Calderon, aka Snowfro, to launch and test Art Blocks, his generative art platform. Art Blocks is now a powerhouse of the generative art space, having released 500 projects and established a physical gallery in Marfa, Texas, that hosts an annual gathering. Calderon’s work extends beyond imagery to the protocols he builds and the community that takes shape around them. The Art Blocks logo is based on the easily recognizable form of Chromie Squiggle, and the link between this artwork and the platform conveys the scope of Calderon’s activity.
Each Chromie Squiggle is unique but visibly connected to the project as a whole, consisting of a jagged horizontal line made of pulsing rainbow colors. The particular shape and thickness of the line, the mix of colors, and even the opacity are traits with various levels of rarity that are determined by the algorithm at the time of minting. Chromie Squiggle #2583 is a rare example, being one of the fewer than 400 outputs with the trait of a bold line.
