Phase #510

Description

A moiré pattern is formed when designs with tight lines overlap at a slight angle, causing another pattern to emerge. This effect is typically an error, an unwanted convergence of screen resolution and small, busy patterns. But it can be put to use in artful ways, as in Loren Bednar’s _Phase, _a series of 1024 works released on Art Blocks. Bednar uses the moiré pattern as a kind of mark-making in order to add texture to his dreamy abstract compositions.

Muted palettes that recall the warm fuzz of an old tube TV morph in gentle gradients across square compositions that are divided into borderless segments with either right angles or diagonals. Phase #510 features ripples in orange, purple, and blue that bend into a hypnotic glow. Phase #519 is divided into grid and x-like segments, where muddled red, white, and blue patterns pulse and swirl.
