In response to the proliferation of AI text-to-image tools, Ivona Tau created the series “Nondescriptives,”_ _which uses prompted images not as outputs, but as training data to be synthesized by a GAN—an older AI protocol involving competing neural networks that create images and evaluate them for accuracy. The collection thus mediates between the linguistic interpretation of text-to-image models and the GAN’s approach to representation through comparison and judgement.
Exploring this liminal zone aesthetically as well as conceptually, Tau prompted 300 organic images and 300 industrial images for the GAN to merge. _Nondescriptives #27 _exemplifies this synthesis. Bathed in ocean-blue hues, this iteration seems initially to be an organism with flower petals, branching roots, and stems. Upon closer inspection, however, the roots appear smooth like drain piping. The petals evoke a suspension bridge’s latticework composition. Its coarse texture is almost like concrete.
_Nondescriptives #27 _is part of a collection of outputs that belong to multiple worlds. Ambivalent toward its natural and artificial elements, Tau celebrates both approaches to imagery.
